EMMA for Practitioners

This training is designed to prepare humanitarian practitioners from any sector or department to participate in an EMMA assessment. It can be and has often been conducted as a standalone training, which typically involves three-and-a-half days of classroom training and a day-and-a-half of practical field exercises. However, it has been found to be more effective when combined with an actual EMMA assessment exercise; in this case, the focus of the training material can be shifted to the existing emergency context (rather than relying on theoretical case studies, as the original EMMA training material does).

This website provides links to the complete set of original EMMA training material, developed in conjunction with the EMMA Toolkit in 2009. This is the same material that is provided on the CD that comes with the published version of the EMMA Toolkit. Although this material has been used in many trainings, there have also been many adaptations of the EMMA workshop material developed by the numerous people who have facilitated these trainings over the years. We present one example of alternative training material here. The EMMA for Practitioners curriculum is not rigid, and it can be adapted depending on the length of time available, the existing knowledge and capacity of the participants and the desired outcome of the workshop.

Though standalone, in-person trainings have generally been very well received, and there is clearly a lot of demand for them, they are becoming rarer in favor of workshops that are tied to actual assessments. If you would like to organize an EMMA training, we provide some guidance on how to do so here. In order to increase access to trainings for people from all walks of the humanitarian community, the IRC and CaLP have recently collaborated to produce 3.5-hour long e-learning version of this course, Market Analysis for Practitioners, that is also relevant to other emergency market analysis tools and approaches, such as RAM, MAG, PCMA, MIFIRA, the WFP Trader Survey and the 48-hour tool. To access the course, click here. (You will be prompted to create an account on Disaster Ready - registration is free.)

Time Commitment:
3-5 days for in-person training, roughly 3.5 hours for e-learning course

Sample 5-day EMMA training agenda

A training schedule for an IRC-led EMMA training that took place in Nairobi in March 2014. It is fairly typical of many standalone EMMA trainings. It could easily be adapted for workshops that are tied to actual assessments, for example by using the actual context for the early exercises rather than fictional case studies, and by using the field work time to develop and field test questionnaires.
